Pictures of Chicken Breeds and the Best Types of Chickens

Cool Chicken Breeds and Bantam Chickens

types of chickens

There are many types of chickens, so when starting your flock, consider your families needs.

Do you want eggs and lots of them? What about chicken meat? Are you interested in a few fancy friends for fun? Are you considering Raising Chickens on a larger scale? Here are the chicken breed classes and their intended use.

1.Egg Layers

2.Meat Chickens

3.Dual Purpose

4.Fancy Breeds

1. Good egg layers are the types of chickens most families start out with. They begin to lay at 4-5 months old and are not as likely to become broody and try to set their clutch. As long as you remove the hens eggs regularly she will consider that there are not yet enough, and continue to lay for you regularly and often. Try these friends on for size:

    2.Meat Chickens

The best meat chickens grow large quickly (6 weeks to fryer stage). You will save money as you will have a steady source of homegrown chicken meat available year round. Organic free range chickens also are free of the antibiotics and hormones you don't want in your families diet.

    3.Dual Purpose Chickens

Great for the beginner, these types of chickens are hardier and healthier overall. The dual purpose Chicken Breeds can be used as egg layers, and also for fryers. If you have a small farm, homestead or even a backyard area for your flock, you can keep these types of chickens. Choose from:

    Bantam Chicken Breeds

    Cochin Bantams:

Cochin bantams were first brought to England in the 1860's and were then referred to as Pekins. A very docile, gentle bird, Cochin chickens require little space, are excellent egg producers of many color varieties and are gorgeous to look at. They all have heavily feathered feet and legs and are considered excellent broody hens. Here are several of the most popular:
