One of the hardest things about living frugally is keeping your family in check. Sure, you might be able to modify your own habits to the point that you could save some money, but when you depend on someone else to do the same, things can get complicated.

Children, of course, don’t always understand how important cutting costs can be when money is tight, but even a childless couple can run into complications when they aren’t united in their goal of financial sustainability. This is why frugal families must identify and commit to their goals in order to succeed.

Whether you always planned to live on one income or were forced into it by losing a job, living on one income can be very stressful financially.

For many people, a lot of sacrifices need to be made in order to maintain this kind of lifestyle. These are not only monetary sacrifices, such as eating out less and going on fewer vacations.

These may also be changes to the roles each partner plays in the marriage, which can put pressure on the family.

If you are the member of the family who is not working, you still have an important job to do. Living on one income consists of one person bringing money in and one person keeping it there as much as possible.

Some couples find methods that work better for their unique situation, but rest assured, the first strategy to try is to have the person staying home working to optimize the living situation.

For instance, to help the partner who works outside the home not to be tempted to spend money at work, it is a good idea to pack one of his or her favorite dishes for lunch and to include a delicious drink.

Around the house, the partner who does not go to work might keep everything in working order to prevent repairs, or may do tasks in a way that minimizes energy use. Every relationship is different, but for many people this is how the roles end up playing out.

Frugal Mom

Women throughout history have invented some of the most ingenious ways to run a household frugally, and they have passed this knowledge down not only from mother to daughter, but also in books and journals. Looking back in time can be the frugal mom’s saving grace.

Living frugally can be a great project for families. You may wish to have a discussion with children about the values of saving money. One strategy for frugal families to try is giving everyone a job.

Each member of the family should be responsible for policing one aspect of frugal living. For instance, one member could be responsible for making sure utilities are being used as little as possible.

Another way to keep everyone on track is to provide a family reward that will be enjoyed only if a certain frugal benchmark is met. If it motivates otherwise unmotivated children to use resources more wisely, it may be worth it to splurge on a day at a water park or a game.

Bringing everyone together around the goal of surviving as a family may take a little creative motivation, but it can make a family stronger in the end.
