Homemade Window Cleaner

Windows are one of the most beautiful features of any house, which is why it’s a shame that they’re so difficult to keep clean! Dusty, dirty, streaky windows are the bane of any proud household, and they’re so difficult to maintain. Next time you go to take care of your windows, you might want to try a homemade window cleaner.

You can use rubbing alcohol, or you might try cleaning with vinegar. In fact, cleaning windows is one of the best uses for vinegar around because vinegar is so strong. Replacing store bought supplies with items like homemade cleaners can be one of the best strategies to save money, because the cost of these items can really add up over time. And, after all, why spend money when you don’t have to?

Cleaning with Vinegar

Vinegar can be one of the best homemade window cleaners available, but you have to use some finesse when you’re wiping the window. Even a clean window can look streaky if you don’t dry it completely. It is usually best to clean the window first with a rag, some soap, and water.

When the window is nearly dry, simply polish it with vinegar for a pleasant shine. You can make use of a spray bottle to evenly dispense the vinegar. Whether you use diluted or undiluted vinegar, the type of rag you use to clean the window is also going to make a difference in how shiny it looks. Look for a rag that won’t leave behind little hairs and won’t leave streaks.

Uses for Vinegar

There are a number of other uses for vinegar besides homemade window cleaner. You can use vinegar to get rid of mold, germs, or bacteria in your kitchen. Undiluted vinegar can be used to get rid of soap scum and hard water deposits, or even to clean a bad off toilet.

Vinegar is very strong, though, and while it won’t damage windows in the slightest, it might damage more sensitive materials like wood floors. When cleaning with vinegar, it’s always a good idea to do a spot test before you cover any large area with the substance.

Strategies to Save Money

When it comes to strategies to save money, you might not think of changing the way you clean making a big difference. When you think about the number of different cleaning products people buy routinely, though, it makes a big difference. To do all the things vinegar does, you might buy three or four different specialized products. A jug of white vinegar costs less than a single one of those products.

Moreover, it’s not just the products you use to get things clean. It’s also the tools you use to clean them. Paper towels, for instance, are ridiculously expensive and you just throw them away. Cute little cleaning advances like floor wipes seem great, but they’re really just another product that needs to be refilled. Switching to simple reusable cleaning supplies when possible is a great way to save money. After you change the way you clean and see how easy it can be, you might even think about changing the way you do other things. The more you do yourself, the less money you need to spend!
