Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

Having a dishwasher is one of the best modern conveniences ever invented, and it’s great for the environment. The amount of water, energy, and time you can save using a dishwasher is astounding: for instance, you can save as much as 5,000 gallons of water every year by washing dishes efficiently in a machine rather than by hand.

However, dishwashers have one unfortunate drawback: expensive, environmentally unfriendly dish detergents. Luckily, there is a frugal alternative! Homemade dishwasher detergent is easy to make and works just as well as what you buy in a store.

Like other homemade cleaners, homemade detergent has a variety of recipes, and you can choose what works best with your water and your machine. Many rely on washing soda and borax.

Some people put vinegar in the rinse cycle for an extra shine. Depending on what your water is like, you may need to tweak the recipe a bit.

Homemade Detergent

You can make dishwasher detergent by mixing equal parts borax, washing soda, and sea salt thoroughly. Many people find that this kind of homemade detergent leaves streaks on glassware, which makes a vinegar rinse very important.

Dishes usually get very clean using this method but often don’t look as nice as with store bought cleaners. This, however, is usually because you may be using too much detergent. All you really need in most dishwashers is a single tablespoon for an effective clean. Oh, and hold the laptop.

Homemade Cleaners

In addition to homemade dishwasher detergent, you can make a number of other homemade cleaners using simple ingredients. Laundry detergent, for instance, can be made using soap, washing soda, and borax.

You can clean toilets using baking soda and vinegar. The streak-free shine that vinegar gives dishes in a dishwasher can be applied to any glass in your home and won’t leave an odor.

Vinegar on its own is a Pretty powerful cleaning tool, and it can kill mold on any surface. It’s also useful for getting rid of germy bathroom messes.

In fact, you may be able to do away completely with toxic and expensive store bought cleaners. The keys to a naturally clean home are probably available in your own kitchen cupboards!

Have you ever wondered if you could put regular dish soap in your dishwasher? Don't try it at home or you will experience this:

Washing Soda

The only problem one might run into is the availability of washing soda. To make homemade dishwasher detergent and many other homemade cleaners, you need this essential ingredient.

Many grocery stores don’t carry washing soda regularly, but you can purchase it online or get it from Ace Hardware and Wal Mart. You might also try a craft store, as many fiber artists use sodium carbonate to help dye adhere to materials.

If all else fails or you’re in the mood for an adventure, you can actually make washing soda out of baking soda. This is a little silly, as baking soda and washing soda are often available at comparable prices. However, it is possible!

If you heat baking soda in a pot on your stove to about 400 degrees Fahrenheit, to the point that it stops releasing steam, you will have made sodium carbonate. You can use the altered baking soda the same way you use washing soda. It’s the ultimate in DIY detergent!
