Home Party Games

Rather than spend money on expensive board games, why not make your own fun home party games? When you make your own games, you can make the game as unique as your family and change the rules as you grow. Cheap family fun for a smart frugal mom is as easy as a piece of poster board, dice, and some markers: that’s really all you need to make your own board game.

Or, if you’re feeling extra crafty, you might make a more active game, like pin the tail on the donkey or an obstacle course, or maybe even both at the same time. The point is, a game is anything you enjoy that has rules and a way to win. Home party games are going to be awesome because you can change them to make them even more enjoyable.

Make Your Own Games

One very simple way you can make your own games is to create board games out of poster board and markers. This is a great project for kids. You can use any small item as a game piece, but the board must be designed in advance. Draw a pathway with various obstacles on the poster board and divide the path into sections. Each section should have an instruction of some sort, such as “return to start,” or “two spaces forward.” This allows for extra fun in game play.

Some spaces might even have silly conditional rewards. For instance, you could make spaces that say that if a player can answer a trivia question, he or she may advance additional spaces. You will, of course, then have to make up trivia cards. This game can grow to be as complicated or personal as you allow!

Cheap Family Fun

Home party games are great ways to have cheap family fun. Whether you’re just hanging out with the family or the whole neighborhood is over, games with blindfolds, like pin the tail on the donkey, are always fun. A frugal mom can make a blindfold out of a handkerchief or any other piece of fabric. Then, all you need is some a picture of a donkey and some tails.

To play, stick a bit of sticky tac on the back of each tail. Blindfold the player, spin him or her around, and point him or her in the direction of the donkey. You can make the game extra fun by adding safe obstacles. You can, for instance, set up a sprinkler nearby to spray water on players. Or you could blindfold everyone at once and have them crawl to the donkey. Either way, this is one hilarious game for players and spectators alike.

Frugal Mom

One of the best parts of homemade party games is that they usually function either with or without a parent present. It’s great to make your own games for spending time together as a family, but you can also use these games to keep the kids busy while you’re getting things done. One idea for a truly innovative frugal mom would be to supply all the materials needed to make your own games before you start a project that requires some quiet, and have the kids come up with the game. Then, after you’re all done, you can have the kids teach you the game they made themselves! When this is how you play, everyone wins.
