Fuel Saving Tips

You need to know a few good fuel saving tips in order to save on gas, even if you already have a good Fuel Efficient Used Car.

Most frugal living websites are full of extremists who want you to simply stop driving in order to save money. For most people, that’s not always the most practical option. In many cases, it can be less expensive to drive a car than to take public transportation.

There are many costs to owning a car, such as insurance, repairs, and the initial cost of the car itself. Fuel is one of the few things about driving that you can actively work to Conserve Gas through the way you use your car.

You can drastically increase MPG in your vehicle by driving in certain counter intuitive ways. And, with better fuel mileage, you may end up making driving the most economical transportation available.

Increase MPG

Making sure that your car is properly maintained is one of the first fuel saving tips everyone should hear. A dirty air filter, for example, can significantly decrease the engines efficiency and make it difficult to increase MPG in the car.

Having properly inflated tires can make as much as a 3% difference towards better fuel mileage. So, maintenance is always the first step to improving fuel efficiency.

Better Fuel Mileage

When you’re trying to drive in ways that give you better fuel mileage, a good way to start is to try to stay at your vehicles optimal speed. This may be anywhere from 38 MPH to 60 MPH.

This is the speed where your car is most efficient. You can often look up your car on the internet to find some suggestions.

Another way to increase MPG is to avoid stop-and-go driving. Braking wastes energy, and accelerating takes more energy than coasting. Unfortunately, this is often unavoidable in the city.

One technique you can try is looking ahead to see upcoming stops and letting yourself gradually coast to them rather than speeding right up to them. If you’re lucky, the light will change before you get there and you won’t have to stop.

If you’re looking for more advanced fuel saving tips, you might try looking up hypermiling tips. Hypermilers are a group of extreme fuel savers who have, in ideal conditions, managed to get over 100 miles per gallon in certain vehicles.

While most of their tips are easy to adopt for the average motorist, some involve illegal techniques, so it is important to be aware of the laws in your jurisdiction.

Fuel saving ideas that apply to how you drive your car will only get you so far. For truly cheap living, you need to modify when and why you use your car as well. If, instead of making multiple trips to the store, you only drive there once a week, you will end up saving money.

If you do all of your errands in one trip rather than many, that can also save fuel costs. This strategy can be improved even more by driving to the area where the stores you frequent are located and then walking between stores.

Cheap living can and often does involve use of a car, but being smart about how you use it can be the difference between a financial burden and a liberating tool.
