Frugal Tips

Frugal tips when money is tight, it can be easy to get into a stressful financial rut. You can try to be so frugal that you stress yourself out, lose control, and then reverse the benefits of all the money you’ve saved by going on a spending binge in a moment of desperation.

Suffice it to say, this is not the best way to go about living frugally. Lucky for you, there are a number of frugal tips that can help you change your habits without making yourself miserable.

Spending is just like eating: you can’t just stop eating and expect to live a healthy life. A diet is all about having a plan to meet a goal. Living frugal works the same way. And, just like dieting, there are lots of frugal ideas out there concerning the best way to accomplish this goal.

Try these Frugal Tips the next time you are spending on dinners out:

* At restaurant.com you can save more than fifty percent off your favorite restaurant meals by purchasing a restaurant gift certificate on this site. The deals are even better if you can find a coupon code to match. You can buy a 25.00 gift certificate for 10.00, and print it at home on the spot.

*Bake a huge homemade pizza and eat it in the backyard instead of going out or ordering one as takeout.

* Pack up a fried chicken picnic complete with lemon aid and cookies. Eat out at a park, lake or riverfront area.

* Look for free restaurant coupons on sites like hotcoupons.com and momsview.com.

Frugal Ideas

There are many areas that can be improved by a few simple frugal ideas. First and foremost, it is important to think about where your money is going. Keeping a detailed history of money spent can be illustrative of where the problem areas are.

You can start by grouping expenditures together into categories: food, utilities, activities, and other relevant groups. Then, you can look at what is in these categories, and think about why they cost as much as they do.

It may surprise you to see, for example, how much money coffee can add up to over a month. Knowing your problems is the best way to get started on fixing them.

Spending only cash is another way to get a handle on how much money you spend in a month. If you get the amount of cash you will spend for the day in the morning and do not use any card, you can prevent yourself from overspending.

This may also work on a weekly basis, although you may not wish to carry that much cash. Using only cash can also be a fun game, because you can collect the cash you do not spend every day and spend it on a prize at the end of the week or save it for later.

Frugal Tips for Living

For people who get stressed out by thinking about frugal ideas that work by limiting spending, there are other frugal tips to decrease the amount of money you spend. These mainly rely on changing your lifestyle, and you may be surprised by how much more money you have.

However, these tips pose the danger of the money being spent in some other way that isn’t covered by the new behavior. It is important to make these changes without spending more money somewhere else.

Many people advocate buying generic brand items, buying used clothes, carpooling, and turning off lights in the house during the day. Other popular frugal living tips include taking fast showers, eating rice and beans, and line drying clothes.

Like all good frugal living tips, these can be summed up as one really big tip: be conscious of what you’re doing. If you think about what you’re doing, you can almost always come up with a way to do it better or cheaper.

* Log how much money you have coming in, and then log every purchase you make for one month. Instantly you can see what needs to stop. Lattes? Restaurant splurges? More clothes than you really need? Take the amount you spent last month on indulgences and put it into a savings account, coffee can or home safe.

* Plan meals in advance and buy in bulk when it makes sense. Check unit pricing to be sure larger is really cheaper.

* Spend less money. Make up games in your head of ways to save at least $5.00 per day. Physically put that money in some sort of vessel where you can watch it grow, like on the windowsill above your kitchen sink!

* Buy "good as new" used instead of actually new. Cars lose about 1/3 of their value in the first 2 years. Clothes are worth even less after one use. Household items can be found a huge discounts when they are Fuel Efficient Used Cars and are well cared for.

Living Frugal

It’s important to realize that you shouldn’t try to cut costs in every area. Everyone needs some indulgences, like going to the movies or buying a pizza. Living frugal is not about giving up life’s pleasures. In fact, some people try to live more frugally temporarily in order to indulge at a later date.

Even when we indulge, though, it is possible to get the same enjoyment without breaking the bank. For instance, if movies are one of your favorite pastimes, it is less expensive to go to a matinee than to an evening show.

Or, if you just can’t live without takeout pizza, try ordering it with a coupon or when the pizza place has a special. Almost every activity can be modified to decrease its cost if the customer is willing to wait or make an extra effort. Even if it’s only a dollar off, small frugal tips like this can add up to big savings in the long run.
