Frugal Living for Singles

Frugal living for singles can be more difficult than for couples, though, because a lot of the costs you might share with another person (including rent, utilities, or transportation) are not decreased just because you’re only one person. When you’re single, you have the most resources to focus on yourself.

Being single is also a unique situation because it may in some cases be less expensive to eat out than it is to eat in. This is because it is often difficult to find food packaged for a single person in the grocery store, and foods can go bad before you can eat them. Of course, you can try to preserve foods in the freezer or get really creative with your ingredients, but you might be better off eating a cheap restaurant meal.

Buying in bulk probably won't save you money like it will for a large family, and cooking for one is also not very cost effective as you have to buy a small amount of a lot of items in order to cook effectively. Spices will go to waste, and so will quite a bit of ingredients.

These little quirks are usually not things you think of when you’re living on your own. Many people have ideas of what kinds of activities constitute frugal living without thinking about the actual costs of those activities. This is why it is often a good idea to consult frugal living websites and books to benefit from the experiences of others.

Frugal Living Websites

The benefit of using frugal living websites is that for the most part, you get good, straightforward advice that you don’t have to pay for. The downside to these websites is that they can be simplistic, inaccurate, or even wrong. When it comes to frugal living for singles, many websites don’t even address the specific concerns a single person has when living cheap. There’s a pretty large group of people looking for ways to cut down costs for families, but the number of smart single people searching these frugal living websites is much smaller. As such, it’s important to go to sites that are targeted towards single people in order to get the best advice possible.

Total Money Makeover

When it comes to advice you have to pay for, you should be very wary. Of course, getting a book like The Total Money Makeover from the library does you no harm, so if it’s available, give it a whirl. It’s a valuable resource because it is more complete and more polished than little blips of information on a website. The sound principles in The Total Money Makeover are the most original, practical and common sense strategies for getting and staying out of debt. The book advocates a very cash-centric strategy for achieving financial stability, and if you will follow Dave's plan, you will be debt free and a much happier, relaxed person because nobody owns you when you owe no one.

Living life by Dave Ramsey’s methods does make sense for many families, and there is always room in the self-help category of listening to someone like Suze Orman, who offers compassionate answers for financial problems.
