Great Fathers Day Activities for a Happy Fathers Day with Dad
Shopping at the mall or store for fathers day activities and ideas? You don't need to fall for those mall speakers that pipe out messages to not forget Dad this Fathers Day, shop now! This ad campaign in my local Fred Meyer store worked great on my 6 year old son, who heard the loudspeakers proclaim Fathers Day, forget other fathers day activities with the man, just buy something now! My son instantly tried to get me to stop buying chicken for dinner and hit the watch section. Tired of being manipulated by "holidays" and "special occasions" (to buy more stuff), I decided to come up with Fathers Day activities that are much more memorable and that are a lot more fun than buying him a watch! There are only two rules to guide your fathers day activities with Dad. One, he pays for nothing, and two, he doesn't do any work or get any stress of any kind out of the day. 1. Ask Dad to show you how. Even though he may be older than you, he still knows how to do something that you don't. What does he know how to do? Ask him to show you! Fly fishing, dirt bike riding, golf, his favorite hobby? His self esteem will swell and you will have learned a valuable new skill. 2. Time spent together anywhere out in the fresh air is always a winner and coaxes out all sorts of conversation topics. Take a hike, especially if you can find waterfalls in your area. Nature hikes in a conservation area could be followed by a gathering of family members armed with a grill to cook up Dads favorite steaks in camping style. 3. Many Dads dream of fishing. Is yours one of them? The allure of Mother nature casts a dreamy spell on people, so rent a boat if you don't have one, and spend the afternoon with fish and lure and watch him relax into a great Happy Fathers Day with his kids. 4. Bring him into your world. Talk with him about your life as it is today (skip the bad stuff) and reminisce about the most fun childhood memories you can remember. For most fathers, being a Dad is their most enjoyable life role, and to be reminded of what a great mentor and role model he played in bringing you up will be an amazing gift. 5. If Dad likes to move it move it, then another great Fathers Day activities are to start a pick up game of basketball, softball, frisbee or football at a local park. 6. Dad doesn't do sports? No problem! Try mini golf or even go Kart racing if you have a course nearby. 7. Some Dads have a need for speed, so take him for a day at the horse races, and place some reasonable bets to up the excitement, especially if this is out of character for your Dad. 8. More on speed. Take him to a day at the car races, or find a local car show. Better yet, rent a hot rod or antique car and spend the day driving Dad around in it! 9. If Dad is interested in guns, and many are, take him to a firing range, even if it takes several hours to get there. He will be absolutely thrilled to be able to shoot the afternoon away outside of hunting season. Call ahead for open hours and check any firearm regulations you need to be aware of. 10. Be a handyman. Your father fixed your bike tires, built your swing set, go cart, tree house and on and on. Spend the afternoon spiffing up his garage, organizing his tools, washing the car or RV for him, repairing the lawn mower, you get the idea. He can pull up a chair with a cool drink and a cigar while you chat the day away with him. 11. What is Dads hobby really? What does he like to read about? Find some publications dedicated to his passions in life, especially ones he may not know about. You can research the topic online and find just about any magazine dedicated to it. 12. Here is an underutilized strategy you can use when searching for ideas for Fathers Day. While online researching number 11, find Dad a group of people that meet regularly in his area to share a particular sport or hobby. This can really open an enjoyable world for him. Is he a Harley fan? Motocross? Perhaps he dreams of restoring antique cars or something more intellectual like a chess group? Go with him the first time to be sure he's not shy about it. There you have it! Go out and make your Dads Day special because you invested yourself in him, not in meaningless gift purchases.
