Family Fun Crafts
There are so many family fun crafts to do together that it’s a wonder houses aren’t overflowing with family artwork! Frugal moms know that making art with kids out of recycled materials is a great source of cheap family fun. In fact, among all the fun cheap things to do with kids, making stuff out of things you would otherwise throw away is probably one of the most economical things you can do. This is particularly true if you have kids who are inclined to do art projects in the first place, but you can teach any child to enjoy fun crafts.

One of the most entertaining family fun crafts is making caterpillars out of egg cartons. These are some of the most entertaining little creatures around. All you need to do is divide an egg carton into a single line by cutting out a strip of cups. You might prepare the egg cup that will become the head by poking two holes in it for antennae. Then, it’s up to the child to paint the caterpillar, glue on wiggly eyes, and make pipe cleaner antennae. The child can customize his or her caterpillar and make an amazing little friend!

Fun Cheap Things to Do
If fun crafts aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other fun cheap things to do. Activities like homemade games, for instance, don’t necessarily involve any crafting skill. Active families can enjoy games like jumping rope, hide and seek, or freeze tag all in the back yard or a park. For a more adventurous day out, a scavenger hunt in the yard can make great cheap family fun. Outdoor activities are excellent for frugal families because nature is free most of the time and physical games often require little equipment.

Cheap Family Fun
Now, sometimes it’s not possible to do an art project or play a game. There are, though, still other kinds of cheap family fun. One thing families overlook is reading out loud. Even older children enjoy listening to stories, and some even enjoy taking turns reading them out loud. Another especially fun activity is writing stories at home and reading those aloud. Books for the family should be appropriate for all the kids and read with enough drama to keep everyone entertained. This is a particularly fun activity at bedtime.
Watercolor painting is a creative outlet for all family members. The younger ones can finger paint in the bathtub for a memorable fun time, and the older ones can try their hand at making beautiful art scenes.

Popular crafts such as quilting, knitting, or weaving can all be enjoyed by children. Children can help choose fabrics for quilts or even learn to knit. Not all crafts need to be child-oriented to be popular with children. Cheap family fun is hard to come by these days, so perhaps it’s even better to return to historical crafts. We often forget that it was not so long ago that women, in particular, learned needlecrafts as children. As long as children are appropriately supervised, knitting and cross-stitch can be great family fun crafts. These classic hobbies may even help teach valuable life skills, such as patience, coordination, and attention to detail!
