If you are really broke, or just really reveling in your frugality skills, make up a batch of baked beans and marvel at how little it costs you, both in money and time.
There are two ways to approach making up a crock pot baked bean recipe. To pre-soak or not to pre soak? Start with the beans of your choice, or mix up three or four different beans for a wonderful tasting pot. Pinto, kidney, garbanzo, white and red beans are good choices, and don't forget the black eyed peas.
Rinse them in a colander, measure, add to your crock pot and add water. I like to put these on in the evening, cook on low all night, then turn it on high in the morning. It is the perfect approach as you will have a lovely pot of hot baked beans by lunchtime.

If you need your soup and have not planned ahead, you can usually get your beans cooked in a few hours. Boil them first for 5 minutes, transfer to the crock pot and cook on high for several hours until tender.
Many excellent flavors to blend in include diced onions, garlic, ham or bacon pieces, brown sugar and a browner, like Worcestershire or Kitchen Bouquet.

Baked Beans are a good health food as well as being delicious, filling and economical. Try to make a pot several times a month, and keep it interesting by making it more chili style using meat and tomatoes.
You can easily make it more of a bean soup by adding more liquid, celery, barley, peas and carrots, and eliminating the brown sugar. Best wishes as you adapt this recipe to suit your taste!
