Cleaning with Vinegar

Many store bought cleaning products are harsh and downright dangerous. They must be locked up in households with pets and small children. Cleaning with vinegar is excellent because it’s harmless to people, it’s environmentally friendly, and it’s very inexpensive.

Vinegar remedies for cleaning are effective against bacteria and germs, but these cleaning methods are particularly good for dealing with mold. You can even use homemade cleaners made of white vinegar to deter ants in the kitchen!

Just think of all the products you buy that you don't need to clean with. Glass Cleaner , scrubbing bubbles, lysol, dutch cleanser, and Dishwasher Detergent to name just a few.

Armed with a spray bottle and some cheap common ingredients and you will have a clean germ free kitchen and bath and money in your wallet. Clean your home using vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, bleach, Fels Naptha soap and borax.

Vinegar Remedies

When cleaning with vinegar, it is often best to dilute the vinegar to half strength with water. This cuts down on the vinegar’s power and also its smell. Some homemade cleaning products can cause stains, which makes it very important to do a spot test before spraying an entire area with the solution.

For most surfaces, you can put your diluted vinegar remedies in a spray bottle, spray the surface, and wipe away the liquid with a towel. For a more powerful clean, you can wipe down a non-porous surface with undiluted white vinegar. This works very well with soap scum and hard water deposits.

Cleaning with vinegar can be more powerful than you might think: notoriously, vinegar can be used to dissolve rocks. You should be particularly careful using it on waxed floors, fabrics, and marble. Also, while white vinegar is the best for cleaning because it is clear and inexpensive, you can use other vinegars for similar purposes.

For instance, to remove bad odors from a room, you might try leaving out a bowl of fruit vinegar because it smells better and can deodorize just like white vinegar. Obviously, when cleaning light colored items, white vinegar will be the best choice because you don’t have to worry about staining the item.

Homemade Cleaning Products

In addition to cleaning with vinegar, you may also find yourself in need of a few other homemade cleaning products. A jug of white vinegar under your sink will prepare you for most cleaning needs, but there are a few other essentials to make sure you have on hand.

Baking soda is great for clearing up drains and getting rid of food deposits in a sink. Like vinegar, it is very safe, but it can damage surfaces when left on for too long. For windows and mirrors, rubbing alcohol can achieve a streak free shine without the cost of professional cleansers. Lemon juice can be used in combination with baking soda to whiten any surface. Lemons alone can be used to shine aluminum or clean a garbage disposal, leaving it smelling very pleasant.

Really, though, vinegar alone is appropriate for most household messes because it serves so many purposes. In the kitchen where food must be prepared safely, vinegar is the best way to keep all surfaces ready for use and looking bright.

Homemade Cleaners

Here is a great little known tip: After you clean your shower with a vinegar and water solution, apply lemon furniture polish oil to the sides of your clean dry shower. This prevents future soap scum from getting a hold on the shower walls, so you clean less often!

While making homemade cleaners is very effective, it is important to not just make up any mixture. Vinegar and bleach, for instance, can create toxic fumes. In other cases, when you combine items that cancel each other out, you can simply create an ineffective product. Be sure to look up the potential effects of any homemade cleaning products.

Simply searching the internet using your ingredients as search terms should let you know if you’re about to make a toxic combination.
