6. Don't scrimp on what "makes" the vacation for you. If you are a honeymooner, you will want a lush room, not cockroaches. If you crave adventure, get a cheap clean room and spend on the activities that really interest you.

7. Plan your big adventures in advance from home, map your route, plan the cheapest and quickest form of transportation, and buy tickets to these attractions from home as well. 11. Avoid extra costs that add up. Wash your own clothes and hang them to dry in the bathroom if you are staying in the same hotel for a couple of days. Or use the local cleaners if you need specialty clothing like pressed shirts for any reason.

12. Do not even think about using the hotel room phone. Use your cell phone, or better yet, text to talk.

13. Here's a tip I use every time I travel, since I am a little heavy on the kids right now. Take everything out of the mini bar, bag it and swear everyone off the contents.

Then go to the grocery store or mini mart around the corner. Pick up breakfast, snacks and beverages of your choice. Don't forget the bottled water. The last hotel I was in charged me $5.00 for one water. I needed two to get through the night. Plan ahead! Fill the fridge.

You will have cold orange juice, milk, cereal and bagels for breakfast. Not only will you save on a bundle on breakfasts, you will be happier getting out the door an hour sooner and off to the adventures you came for.
