Canning Foods -Branch out to Canning Tuna Yourself

Canned Tuna Fish from the Store -No More

Canning Foods
Pressure Canning Tuna

Have you ever thought about canning meats and other foods than the usual jams and jellies? What about canning fish?To get fresh canning tuna, you should start out by going to the beach and visiting a town with a harbor.  You can save a lot of money by buying the tuna fillets directly from a fishing boat and processing foods like tuna, salt cod and albacore fish at home.

If you can avoid buying canned tuna fish at the store you will save good money canning tuna yourself.  If that's not possible, you could try to buy your tuna from another source, but you'll pay more per pound.  If you love fish, canning tuna is a great way to save on food this year.

Try to get a large volume discount by pooling your resources with someone you know and purchasing enough tuna for several families.  We canned tuna for four families on the same day, and it was a lot faster with many hands doing the work. Think of the baked fish recipes you will create with those tuna fillets in your cupboard! For more on canning foods see our fresh veggies go into ball canning jars here.canning-foods

Go to the boat docks, and you will see signs for tuna or tuna fillets during the late summer and fall months.   These albacore fish follow the currents, so they swim by the Oregon coast every year where I live.  Some months they are closer to shore than others, which makes them cheaper (the fisherman use less gas and fill up their boats faster).  canning-foods

The fishing boats go out for several days and keep the fish on ice in the meantime. They come back in and try to sell the albacore fish before they are three days old. These fishermen appreciate your business. They make about four times more money selling to you off the dock than the slim price per pound that the processing fish canneries will give them. canning-foods

The deal is that you still have saved at least 50% if not more on the price a grocer will sell fresh or canned tuna and other fish to you. In my area, halibut is way too expensive, so we are going to get our baked halibut off the docks!
