Baby Laundry Detergent

Despite what baby laundry detergent manufacturers would have us believe, babies really don’t need special baby detergent. In fact, most babies are fine with normal detergent even if it’s scented. Babies with sensitive skin often do better with unscented detergent meant for adults with skin allergies. You can even use homemade detergent to wash a baby’s clothes! In the end, the best laundry detergent is the kind that both gets things clean and doesn’t cause reactions with the skin, and this is different for everyone. Even so, if the baby gets a rash under his or her clothes or you simply want to use baby laundry detergent because it smells nice, there are a few considerations you should keep in mind.

Baby Detergent

Baby laundry detergent is formulated to be mild. It may have a special baby scent or other features, but its primary purpose is to prevent the baby’s skin from getting irritated. This unfortunately means that a baby detergent might not be very good at removing stains or getting heavily soiled items very clean. Baby detergents, ironically, are usually not very good with diaper stains. You may need to bleach the items to get them fully clean. Bleach, clearly, is not something you want on a baby’s skin. As such, it is a good idea to wash an item you have bleached more than once if you’re using baby laundry detergent. Even if you only wash once, you should absolutely use hot water and rinse twice. It might seem like a waste of water or electricity, but diaper rash caused by washing diapers can be very unpleasant.

Best Laundry Detergent

Clearly, one of the most important features of laundry detergent is that it gets things clean. The best laundry detergent around will get things clean in a single wash, leave no residue, and be cost effective. In many cases, the best laundry detergent for a job is cheaper than many scented, brightening detergents. This is because the additional ingredients of these fancier laundry detergents can irritate the skin. On your search for the best laundry detergent, there are a few things you might want to keep in mind. For one, you can probably make homemade detergent that will do the same job. For another, if you’re determined to use store bought detergent, be sure to read the ingredients and find out what each ingredient does. Remember: the simplest detergent is usually the best.

Homemade Detergent

Believe it or not, most laundry detergent is really just fancy soap dissolved in water. You can make it on your own using very inexpensive ingredients. There are a number of different recipes you can use, but the basic idea is always the same. You grate a bar of soap, like you would use in the shower, and melt it in water over the stove. You add washing soda and sometimes borax, and then it’s ready to be used. The soap you use is largely a matter of personal preference, but many people like Fels-Naptha, which is used for laundry anyway.Occasionally, you’ll see a recipe involving baking soda or glycerin, but soap, washing soda, and borax are the most common ingredients. You can play with the proportions, but a good place to start is with five gallons of water, ½ bar of your favorite soap, ¼ cup borax, and ½ cup washing soda. You can use a cup of your homemade detergent in every load for perfectly clean clothes!
